I think that this kind of medicine is very expensive because of the doctors give the prescriptions very hardly and also because they are brought from Europe and Latin America.

  2. Ben, MD (almost) says:

Most of them are scams… They prey on people’s weaknesses to make money.

  3. nickname says:

holistic doctors need money for their student loans just like all other doctors.

I think b/c it is not approved by the FDA? Not really sure, but that is my guess.

  5. christa says:

  6. Iomegan says:

alternative medicine is an age old gimmick of quackery with a new name.

Health fraud is lucrative and ripe for multi-level marketing ripoffs. So much relies on hearsay testimony, second hand info, rumors, and unqualified “experts.”

If you think about it, alternative (eastern) medicine is really NOT any more expensive than going to a western doctor. It just seems more expensive because instead of just paying a copay you are responsible to pay for the visit out of pocket. Just look at your EOB after your insurance company pays.

Many insurance companies work with acupuncturists to provide a discount (appx 20%) and Medicare has actually approved acupuncture needles as a “medical device” which is a huge step in eventually working toward having these treatments covered by insurance.

If you are going to a reputible, licensed acupuncturist or DOM (Dr of Oriental Medicine) their goal should be to get you back in balance and healthy and your visits should become much much less frequent.

It WOULD be a scam to make you buy a bunch of stuff in order to complete your treatments or if you are told you need to have visits twice a week for the rest of your life.

Make sure whomever you consult is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine:

Generally, “alternative medicine” is just the 21st century version of patent medicine of the 19th century. One memorable group of patent medicines — liniments that allegedly contained snake oil, supposedly a universal panacea — made snake oil salesman a lasting synonym for a charlatan. In 1905, Samuel Hopkins Adams published an exposé entitled “The Great American Fraud” in Collier’s Weekly that led to the passage of the first Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. This statute did not ban the alcohol, narcotics, and stimulants in the medicines; it required them to be labelled as such, and curbed some of the more misleading, overstated, or fraudulent claims that appeared on the labels.

It depends on the company you get it from for one. Second, if you think alternative is expensive look at your doctors bills before insurance steps in. Third, have you ever gotten on a prescription medicine for a condition? You never stop taking the medication because it treats the symptom not the problem. Alternative addresses the problem. If you do look at some of the products from MLM companies first see how they stand behind their products. Money back if not satisfied 100% is my standard with at least a 60 day trial for the product. Also check if they are a licensed pharmaceutical company because that guarantees a consistent product that has been tested. One thing to remember is that not all things work for all people. What causes a pain in one person may not in another. I use products from a company some call a MLM even though it is not in my opinion (and the US Chamber of Commerce among others) and the products are cheaper than Wal-mart but that is a topic not for here. If orthodox medicine couldn’t stop my sons MRSA infection and alternative could (this is just one example I have experienced) then I am all for it. By the way this alternative cost me $2.00 and this was after missing a lot of work over a 5 month period.

Hmmm, you’re covering a huge area when you say “alternative medicine.” I’m guessing you mean anything that is not recognised as “legit” by Western medical practitioners. That still doesn’t narrow things down that much but let’s break it down a bit more:
    first: what is legit?
What that means is that the effectiveness of these practices cannot be measured in Western terms (ie: with machines, with government and/or corporate funded statistics). The beauty of Alternative health is that it stands outside of conventional definitions…THAT’S THE POINT! That doesn’t mean, however, an Alternative practitioner doesn’t have to study their trade. There are governing groups who lay out minimum education requirements and monitor their members carefully. They are “legit” within the standards of their discipline. Check with the person you are thinking of trying out, or better yet, Google the group and do your homework
    As for the expense:
Because very few Alternative practices are covered by extended health and they do not benefit from doctor’s referrals, most of us are on our own. We need to survive like everyone else. Again, shop around…there are plenty of people who will offer rates at sliding scale or student /senior discounts.

By the way: the Chinese brought snake oil to North America because it worked. The scam came later when the profiteers started selling knock off versions for profit. A bit like the modern pharmaceutical biz if you asked me…..

First of all, people who say that alternative medicines sold through multi level marketing companies are all scams are so very uneducated. It tells me that they were indeed sucked in by some scam out there, so their mission is to warn everyone that they are all scams. This couldn’t be further from the truth. If you went to a restaurant and they made a mistake on your bill would you run out and tell everyone that all restaurants are scams? Of course not.
Multi Level Marketing is just as legitimate as commercial marketing. It is merely a different way to market a product. Not better nor worse, just different. The dollars are just distributed different ways but the end result is the same.
Donald Trump said if he had to do it all over again, he would start with Multi Level Marketing. I would take his advice over some yahoo on yahoo who tells you it’s all a scam.
If you compare the cost of conventional medicine with alternative you will see there is not a lot of difference. People are turning more and more to alternative because their health is not improving with pharmaceuticals. No one calls it a scam when they go to their local pharmacy and purchase vitamins and supplements that have little to no nutrients and have cardboard fillers! Yet that is the biggest scam going, but because people are familiar with the name brand they think it’s okay…this is because they have not done their homework to see what is actually IN these vitamins. I guess what it boils down to is an investment in your health. Look how much money people blow every day on slurpees, junk food, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. They have no problem with that…they call that legitimate expenses. Many put out big bucks for the nicest car, house, motorcycle even outrageous car repairs…they don’t think twice.
But when you approach them with a product has been proven over and over again to help them maintain their health, they balk at the expense and start screaming SCAM!!
    Really makes me wonder sometimes.

I must say I am offended at most of the answeres I have read to your questions.. I have been helping People for the last 20 year now.. and If you think I am getting rich on alternative medicine.. then I must be doing something wrong my supplies cost me more then I bring in.. I have doctors sending me clients and I can’t charge any insurance because I get called a guru because I use energy healing as well.. I was given this gift for healing and how to use alternative medicine and if anyone is paying more then what doctors are getting then you are getting ripped off.. Please I will take some of these people so I can drive a BMW and a Mercedes on the weekend. I can understand why people get riped off by so many people when they have no place to turn to I myself have seen so many ads on alternative Medicine sometimes I want to yell fraud.. Believe me there a more people around the world like me you just have to find the right person by asking other people or even and if you find one make sure you ask all kinds of question make a list and take it with you or If you see something advertised check it out before you jump on the wagon, and one of the great resources for info is right here use often.. What I have found that most of the answers you get from here is very good.. but like I said, stop,,check ,,and question…

I actually think that alternative medicine on average is less costly than traditional medicine. But, when people use thier health insurance for medical care, they hardly realize the true cost of the care they receive. If one pays a $10 copay for a prescription drug, and they compare that drug to a comparable alternative supplement, the cost of the drug appears less. But, that drug may retail for considerably more that the alternative.
